Depression

by Becca
(Greensboro, nc)

My husband I have been separated for a little over two months. What I felt was a midlife crisis turns out to be full blown depression. My husband has since gone to the doctor and has started on Prozac to help him with the depression. He has not noticed any changes in his feelings yet, but it has only been a few days. How do you know if it is a midlife crisis or depression that a man is going through?

Noel's response

It is good that your husband went to the doctor and was diagnosed. My understanding of depression medication is that it takes several weeks for it to start taking effect.

As for whether it is a midlife crisis or depression, many men become depressed when they are in a major midlife transition. I was in a mild depression for about five years during my midlife transition in my early 50s.
