Is my boyfriend going through a mid life crisis

The Question

I have been with my boyfriend coming on 2 years, am 28 and he turns 40 in a couple of days. We have just come back from holiday and last night I asked him if everything is ok between us as the last couple of days he has not been himself. He said that he has realised that he doesn't want to be in a relationship anymore. For the past 20 years of his life he has had to consider and think about other peoples' feelings and turning 40 has made him realise he doesn't want that anymore.

He said he can't explain it anymore than that. He says there is no one else involved and I have done nothing at all. It's just the way he feels. This is a huge shock, as I really love him and don't want to lose him. He says he still loves me but can't change the way he feels.
